5 Tips Before You Get Your First Tattoo

Getting your first tattoo is a big deal. Today, tattoos are more popular than ever and is important that you leave the parlour feeling happy with what has been permanently inked into your skin.

At Second 2 None Tattoos, we have done plenty of people’s first tattoos (and cover ups), so we are offering you advice to help your first tattoo experience run as smoothly as possible. Call us on 01790 380069.

Don’t Rush

Choosing the perfect tattoo isn’t easy, especially when it’s your first. Your tattoo is going to be on your skin for the rest of your life, so finding the right design is important. Does your design have a personal connection? For a beginner, you should choose something that is personal to you, a piece of who you are.

If you can look at your tattoo in 10 years’ time and still love it, then you have made the right decision. You should be committed to a design before you give it the green light, and there is no shame in starting small too.

Research Ideas Ahead Of Your Appointment

We recommend researching designs before your appointment and come in with plenty of reference material so we can design a custom piece just for you. Also, if you are getting something in another language, make sure it is 100% correct.

Bring A Friend

If you are nervous, don’t go alone; bring a friend. It is even better if they have been tattooed before. Having someone to walk you through the process and talk to can really help calm your nerves while the artist can be left to do their job.

If you are getting a tattoo in a place you can’t see, your friend can keep you informed of the progress.

Consider Placement

Tattoo placement is important. Tattoos on certain parts of your body will fade faster than others and it’s a lot of money to spend for something that won’t last very long.

Depending on the tattoo’s placement, the level of pain will vary. Areas such as the armpit, rib cage, neck and spine are the most painful.

Look After Yourself

Rule one of getting a tattoo is don’t go drunk. Too much alcohol can thin your blood which can lead to excessive bleeding during your session, and we legally must refuse service if we think you have had too much.

Make sure you get a good night’s sleep, eat a good meal and drink lots of water beforehand. You want to be well-rested and properly fed to reduce irritability and fatigue – the last thing we want is a fainter!
